Addressing Developmental Education: Professional Development Series

We encourage you to attend our professional development sessions for new and existing ACCUPLACER® users. The ACCUPLACER Vision, announced at the ACCUPLACER National Conference in June, addresses several issues that educational institutions face today when it comes to developmental education. We offer FREE professional development sessions to demonstrate how you can take advantage of useful ACCUPLACER tools to address these issues.

Addressing Current Trends in Placement with ACCUPLACER Multiple Weighted Measures provides an overview of ACCUPLACER's options to refine placement using multiple weighted measures guided by use of background questions and additional data such as GPA and test scores (e.g., SAT®).

ACCUPLACER Diagnostics and ACCUPLACER//MyFoundationsLab demonstrates how combining computer-adaptive assessment with proven targeted intervention and customized learning resources effectively contributes to student success. Several institutions — Cerritos College and Montgomery County Public Schools — testify through their pilot data that ACCUPLACER//MyFoundationsLab does improve student performance and gets students college ready.

Participants Needed for Field Testing of New Adult Basic Education Assessment

It is widely acknowledged that the fastest growing jobs in the 21st century will require some level of postsecondary education. The purpose of Adult Basic Education (ABE) programs around the country is to assist adult students in obtaining the knowledge and skills necessary for community involvement and successful transition to postsecondary programs, so they may begin careers in high-demand fields.

In response, ACCUPLACER is developing an ABE test in reading, writing and math. This test, developed in collaboration with ABE and Developmental Education instructors and administrators, measure competencies adult learners need to be able to succeed in credit-bearing college courses and in the workplace.

Field testing of the new ACCUPLACER ABE test will take place from January through March 2013. If your institution has an ABE program we encourage you to participate in a field test. Each test (reading, writing, or math) contains up to 45 multiple choice questions and may take up to one hour, including instructions.

The ACCUPLACER program will provide free ACCUPLACER units to the institution for each student who completes one or more field tests. Test administrators, proctors and students who complete at least one of the three ABE tests will also be entered into a raffle.

If you or your colleagues are interested in participating in field testing or have questions, please contact us at
Best Practice: Boosting Readiness with Early Testing and Intervention

Montgomery County Public Schools found that administering ACCUPLACER Diagnostics at the high school level provided a range of benefits, including:

  • Dramatic improvements in the students' proficiency level.
  • Robust data identifying students' academic skills, useful for counseling sessions.
  • Ability to compare ACCUPLACER Diagnostics with state testing and PSAT/NMSQT® scores.
  • Ability to aggregate data focusing on average student performance in certain math and English subjects.
  • Improved test-taking experience for students: nearly 88 percent of students said they felt comfortable with the computer-based testing.
